NEW – Knitting – Essentials for Beginners

Knitting is not only a great hobby, it has also been proven to have a positive effect on mental health and well-being. This course is designed for absolute beginners to knitting, you don’t even need to have held a set of knitting needles before! It will explain what the information printed on ball bands of wool and what other yarns actually means. What is the difference between a ball of yarn and a skein of yarn and what will you need to do to them before you start your project. You will learn about the different kinds of needles that are on the market, which yarns to use with which size needles and how the materials they are made from will affect who might want to use them. It will show you how to work out your gauge so your finished knitting is the size you expected. It will explain how the different kinds of fibre you knit with affects the drape of your material. You will also learn some of the basic skills such how to cast on, cast off and use the knit and purl stitches. You will learn how to read a knitting pattern, including common abbreviations and working from charted instructions. At the end you will have the confidence to tackle knitting patterns aimed at beginners to the craft.
No previous experience or knowledge is needed.
Items to bring to class include:
- Knitting needles and yarn to practice.
- You may need to buy additional needles and yarn depending on progress.
Additional costs include the cost of needles and yarn and there is the option to purchase knitting patterns.
You can progress to more advanced knitting techniques.
