Patchwork and Quilting
This course will cover all aspects of Patchwork and Quilting techniques and there are many. Patchwork is not just about cutting pieces of fabric up and then stitching them back together, a common myth. We will explore colour values, a very important aspect of patchwork as you will be spending your valuable time and money to produce a quilted item and the wrong colour choice can make or break a quilt. We will discover the value of using the correct thread and needles.
The first session will cover all these items and we will look at a project for you to follow, which will give you time before the next session to think about your colour choices. Bring your sewing machine if you are planning on using it as we will explore the various ways of securing a ¼” seam, vital in patchwork.
Quilting you will discover is an ongoing theme, although we as Pilgrims took patchwork and quilting to the new world the Americans have made huge strides to prefect the skill but, we Brits are hot on their heels with modern day innovations, some of which are literally, mind blowing.
We will also learn the art of appliqué in it’s many forms, the use of fabric adhesives and their various qualities.
During the course term we will cover hand and machine quilting and also free motion machining which can add so much to a quilted item. Your creativity is just waiting to be tapped.
No previous experience is required for this course, beginners and intermediates are welcome. This course allows you to work at your own pace. This is a hobby and a relaxed atmosphere and approach is all that is needed.
Individuals will follow a tried and tested route , slow and steady, work will be at your own pace. Each person will receive one to one attention to assist in learning the various skills required. Many people become so captivated by the process of patchwork and quilting that they go on to investigate all aspects of textile work and also aim to achieve a qualification in their chosen subject.
Sewing machine will be required although not compulsory as hand stitchers will also benefit from the course. A basic sewing kit and a notebook or file will also be required.
Additional costs would obviously be fabric. Items such as wadding, heat and bond adhesive would be available from the tutor. There are a limited number of rotary cutters, rulers and cutting boards available for student use.
Individuals will progress to completing a quilted item from a full size quilt, a lap quilt or an art quilt, the possibilities are endless.
