Do you have the novel you’ve always wanted to write? Perhaps you have one on the go that you’re a bit stuck with. How about short stories? Very up and coming at the moment. Maybe you’d like to leave some memories for future generations. Whatever reason you have for writing, this course will help you. Remember, we’re not all budding J.K. Rowlings, but we can still enjoy writing.
The course will start with stimuli and a discussion. Students will then be asked to begin to write a story. Each week you will build on those stories (or novel if preferred), focusing on character development, scene development, plot development, description, dialogue, etc. The sessions will take the format of sharing knowledge, input from the tutor, a coffee break and then a little writing and sharing. Nobody will be made to read out loud if they do not wish to. And if the muse doesn’t grab you that day, no worries.
Nothing is set in stone and the tutor very much takes on board the needs and requirements of the learners.
Give it a try, make friends with people with a shared interest and thoroughly enjoy yourselves while hopefully producing a great and meaningful story.
No previous knowledge or experience is required. All levels are welcome; the professional writer has experience to contribute, while those who are new to the craft, have insight and a fresh eye. The main thing is that you want to write.
Each week the tutor will share some information about the craft of writing (see above) which she will welcome discussion on. Then, after the much-needed coffee break, the tutor will ask the students to do some writing which should encompass that which was covered earlier. But, if anybody’s imagination takes them elsewhere, that’s totally fine.
All that is needed is pen and paper (tablet/laptop if needed) and possibly a folder for all the bits of paper that will be accrued.
Please wear whatever you’re comfortable in.
There are no additional costs unless you want a special pen or pad.
Progress is dependent on the individual. The thing about writing is that practise really does make perfect. The tutor has found in the past that progression comes if people keep attending the courses; they can then hone their skills with the support and encouragement of other course members.
