French for Beginners
A chance to either revive your old school French, or start from scratch, if need be!
This is intended as a BACK TO BASICS/BEGINNER level course, so if you have done further study in the language at any point, please enquire about more suitable alternatives (e.g. one of our higher-level groups) for the comfort and consideration of all. Many thanks.
Course Content
We will start right from the basics and work on various areas of Listening, Speaking Reading and Writing, with a view to you becoming a clearer and more confident communicator.
Topics we aim to cover throughout the course (depending on group needs and progress):
- Greetings and Introductions
- Family, friends, where you live
- Useful everyday expressions
- Numbers (for various topics)
- Days, Months, Dates
- Time
- Food + Drink (eating out/shops)
- Booking a table (menus, bills)
- Markets and Shops (money, payments, quantities, weights)
- Directions – asking and understanding
- Buying tickets – bus, train, cinema, shows, museums, etc.
Other key areas will include:
- Pronunciation for better communication/understanding
- Listening and Speaking – confidence-building skills
- Questions + Answers – how to understand and respond
- Masculine and Feminine
- ‘Little’ words – à, de, en, etc.
- Useful Verbs – how to use them
- The Negative – don’t, can’t, etc.
- Sifting out ‘false friends’ to avoid awkward moments!
Materials and Resources
No coursebook, but the tutor will provide a mix of printed materials, audio recordings, and advice on resources you may like to use to assist your learning. You will also be given work to practice your skills between classes, but there are no formal assessments.

(A dictionary will not be necessary)
We create a class WhatsApp group for sending work and sharing notes, relevant info, reminders, or weather updates.
Progression
The course is run on a rolling programme basis, allowing you to ‘keep going’ with the same group into the Spring and Summer Terms (from where the previous term left off), if you are happy to do so.
Optional ‘upgrade’ to Beginners Plus/Intermediate the following academic year.
